Summary
WWF WrestleMania was the first WWF title to hit both 8‑bit and 16‑bit consoles, debuting on the NES as Rare’s and Acclaim’s inaugural wrestling partnership. It arrived just months before WrestleMania V, riding the hype of the pay‑per‑view’s tagline “Bigger. Better. Badder.” and kicked off a decade‑long Acclaim‑WWF relationship.
The game’s roster is a tight six‑man lineup: Hulk Hogan, André the Giant, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, “The Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, Bam Bam Bigelow and The Honky Tonk Man. Each wrestler has a small but personality‑driven move set—Savage swaps punches for elbow smashes, DiBiase favors eye gouges, and only Hogan can bodyslam the massive André. Unique power‑up icons (a crucifix for Hogan, a foot for André, a guitar for Honky Tonk) appear during bouts, and a flashing red hue signals an “angry” state that boosts damage.
Players can square off in a single exhibition or battle through a round‑robin tournament where every competitor faces each other once. The champion is the wrestler with the best record, and a tie is broken by whoever logged the fastest victory in the series.
Critics were split: Game Zone gave it an 88/100 while Total! scored it a modest 30 %. The title even resurfaced as a visual gag in the 2008 film The Wrestler, where a fictional NES game called Wrestle Jam ’88 mimics its style.
