Summary
Wrecking Crew burst onto the NES as a launch title, turning Mario into a demolition worker who swings a hefty hammer instead of leaping over obstacles. In two‑player mode Luigi steps in, but the core challenge stays the same: clear each of the 100 stages by smashing the right objects in the right order.
The playfield is an invisible grid where every square can hold a wall, pillar, ladder, barrel, bomb or enemy. Because the hammer’s weight strips Mario of his jump, you must plan routes carefully—cutting a ladder too early can trap you behind an indestructible wall. Bombs add a chain‑reaction element, wiping out connected blocks for big point bonuses, and occasional items appear for extra flair.
A foreman named Spike (Blackie in Japan) patrols the levels, knocking down structures and trying to send Mario plummeting to the bottom. Contact with any enemy or fireball costs a life, and the game ends when the five‑life buffer is exhausted.
Levels can be chosen from the title screen, but the original NES version lacked a save feature; the level editor required the Japan‑only Famicom Data Recorder, making custom creations a rare treat for collectors.
Storyline
Wrecking Crew is a spin‑off of Nintendo’s Mario franchise. In the game Mario, and Luigi in two‑player mode, navigate a series of construction sites, trying to demolish specific objects. They must race against time while the foreman Spike chases them, constantly trying to block their progress. The simple premise turns each level into a frantic race to clear the area before Spike catches up.
