Summary
Wizardry II: The Knight of Diamonds expands on the original Wizardry formula, keeping the core turn‑based combat and six‑party limit while pushing players deeper into a six‑level labyrinth. The game assumes you’ve already survived the first scenario, so it feels like a true sequel rather than a fresh start. Originally you had to import your heroes from the first title, but later releases hand you a ready‑made party and even let you roll new characters from scratch. This flexibility means newcomers can jump in without the paperwork of a previous save, yet veterans still get the nostalgic thrill of re‑using their hard‑earned adventurers. Expect a steep learning curve: the dungeon is calibrated for parties at least level 13, and there’s no training ground to cushion the blow. The good news is you can now save your progress while still underground, and several spells have been nudged up in power, a subtle hint that the challenges have been cranked up. Every floor hides a fragment of the Knight’s armor, and you must gather all six pieces to claim victory. Unlike the first game, there are no elevators to skip levels – each tier must be explored, making the quest a relentless, level‑by‑level trek through increasingly perilous corridors.
Storyline
The game opens with the city of Llylgamyn under siege after its rulers have been slain. The only hope lies in recovering the magical Staff of Gnilda (also called the Staff of Gailda) which can turn the tide. To obtain it, the player must trade the mystic “Knight of Diamonds” armor, a relic of the legendary Knight of Diamonds, to the invaders. Each of the six dungeon levels hides a piece of that armor, and all pieces must be gathered to complete the quest. Only the most cunning adventurers can survive, as even a single spoken spell can decimate the city.
