Summary
Ghost Lion, known in Japan as White Lion Densetsu: Pyramid no Kanata ni, is a 1989 NES role‑playing title that leans on the 1988 film for its premise while carving out its own quirks. The game drops the usual experience‑point grind; instead Maria’s growth comes from hidden "Miracles" in treasure chests that boost her Hope (level), Courage (HP) and Dream (MP) stats. Combat is a turn‑based menu affair reminiscent of Dragon Quest, but Maria can also call forth spirits with items, turning each encounter into a brief summoning ritual. Navigation is simple—D‑pad moves, A and B handle actions and menus—while saving and healing are tied to scattered fairy springs, giving the world a gentle rhythm of exploration and rest. Critics were split: Famitsu gave it a modest 25/40, Nintendo Power praised the novelty of a female lead, Game Informer settled on 6.5/10 noting the spirit‑summoning mechanic but flagging the art and repetition, and 1UP.com called the non‑Dragon‑Quest bits a "fever‑dream" mash‑up. All of these quirks make Ghost Lion a memorable, if uneven, slice of late‑80s console RPG history.
Storyline
Ghost Lion, known in Japan as White Lion Densetsu, opens with a spectral White Lion rampaging through Maria’s village. A lone hero manages to drive the beast away, but Maria’s parents become obsessed with uncovering the lion’s origin and purpose, setting out on a quest from which they never return. Years later, Maria decides to follow their trail, only to have the bridge beneath her collapse, sending her tumbling into a fierce river.
She awakens in an unfamiliar world, alone and determined to rescue her missing parents and find a way back home. Along the way, she must also track down the mysterious White Lion that started it all.
