Summary

Panic Restaurant, known in Japan as Wanpaku Kokkun no Gourmet World, feels like a culinary carnival gone wild on the NES. The game’s designer, Kenji Eno, packed the six levels with a parade of absurd food‑themed foes – hot‑dog legs that sprint, eggs that hop like frogs, apple slices that take to the air, and even hamburger buns that chase you down the kitchen corridors. Your primary tool is a pan, but the overseas version swaps the chef’s head for a "Clobber Pan" and adds the over‑the‑top "Wacky Pan" that never appeared in the original Japanese release. Critics seemed to love the quirky flavor: Famitsu gave it a modest 23/40, while GamePro awarded 4 out of 5 stars and Power Unlimited called it "one of the tastiest platform games of all time" with an 80% score. The blend of juicy graphics, crunchy humor, and absurd weaponry makes the title a memorable, if off‑beat, slice of early‑90s gaming.

Storyline

Wanpaku Kokkun no Gourmet World, known in the West as Panic Restaurant, follows the plucky chef Cookie as he battles to reclaim his own eatery. After the rival chef Ohdove steals the Eaten Restaurant, the premises become cursed, turning appliances and food into hostile mutants. Armed only with ordinary kitchen tools, Cookie must fight his way through six distinct levels filled with angry dishes and rogue utensils. Each stage ramps up the culinary chaos, culminating in a showdown against Ohdove himself. The game blends quirky humor with classic side‑scrolling action, letting players wield spatulas and ladles to defeat the bizarre food monsters and restore order to the restaurant.
