Summary
"The Ultimate Stuntman" lands in a shiny gold NES cartridge that instantly signals its outsider status. Camerica’s unlicensed approach required a tiny switch on the back to flip between NTSC and PAL, letting the game run on any console. The gold hue was Codemasters’ U.S. signature, while Europe got a black shell. This hardware oddity mirrors the game’s rebellious spirit before you even hit start.
Each episode is a three‑part gauntlet. First you chase Dr. Evil in a vehicle—car, hang glider, dune buggy—then you ditch the wheels and gun down enemies on foot. The third act is a vertical climb that feels like Crazy Climber, but you also act as a sniper, shooting hazards while the hero ascends, and you can only move or shoot at a time. After the boss, a frantic bomb‑defusal puzzle forces you to hop a cursor across numbered blocks before the fuse burns out.
Gavin Raeburn’s soundtrack injects a bubblegum‑pop chiptune vibe, even using a rare 7‑bit PCM drum sample borrowed from a Casio CZ‑101 synth. The music bounces as you battle mechanized maniacs, collect power‑ups, and dodge booby‑trapped bombs, giving the whole experience an oddly upbeat feel. It’s one of the few NES titles that sounds more like a synth‑pop arcade than a retro platformer.
Storyline
In Ultimate Stuntman (often just called Ultimate Stuntman), you take on the role of a rogue mercenary known only as the Ultimate Stuntman. The game kicks off when the brilliant scientist Jenny Aykroyd is abruptly abducted by the nefarious Dr. Evil. Your mission is to track down the kidnapping, rescue Jenny, and put an end to Dr. Evil’s corrupt scheme. Along the way you navigate a series of stunt‑filled levels, using the protagonist’s daring skills to overcome obstacles. The ultimate goal is to save the scientist and halt Dr. Evil’s plans.
