Summary
Ultimate Air Combat stands out on the NES with its hybrid cockpit‑and‑isometric approach. Each of the 36 regular missions is split in half: a cockpit segment where I must shoot down three enemy jets while monitoring fuel and listening to the co‑pilot’s alerts, then an isometric view where the real objective—destroying a base, convoy or installation—takes place. The final mission strings those mechanics together for a longer showdown. The game offers three aircraft—the F‑14 Tomcat, F‑18 Super Hornet and Harrier—each with a slightly different instrument layout; the Harrier is notably easier to control in the cockpit phase. As I progress, Professor Newron adds hard‑points and 13 distinct weapons, and a fuel tank can be equipped for extra time.
Even with modest graphics, the console delivers a clear sense of speed and altitude, and the limited lives system—losing the plane but keeping the pilot—adds tension without being unfair. The Japanese version, Aces: Iron Eagle III, was only loosely tied to the movie but kept the same dual‑view gameplay, making the title a curious mix of semi‑realistic flight simulation and arcade action.
Storyline
Ultimate Air Combat (often just called Air Combat) opens with an emergency White House briefing. The president’s advisers reveal that the ruthless military dictator Don Gwano is funneling massive oil‑export profits into a huge army and navy, and has begun invading neighboring nations.
Rather than launching a full‑scale war, the U.S. decides on a series of rapid lightning‑strike missions aimed at crippling the key installations that keep Gwano’s regime afloat. As the military’s top pilot, the player is hand‑picked to fly these precision attacks and turn the tide.
