Summary

Ultima: Warriors of Destiny on the NES feels like a stripped‑down echo of its PC ancestor. Origin’s 1993 port trims the opening scenes, swaps lush character sprites for blockier figures, and replaces the original’s rich soundscape with just a handful of looping tracks. Swampy areas, for example, become simple poison fields that flash ominously, while the overall movement feels sluggish compared to the smoother engine of the earlier NES entries. The graphics engine shows its age—tiles are less detailed, and the color palette feels muted, making the world look more like a sketch than the vibrant Britannia fans remember. Despite these compromises, the game still captures the core feel of the series, offering a nostalgic, if rough, glimpse of the fifth Ultima adventure for cartridge collectors.

Storyline

Summoned back to Britannia by his old friends Iolo and Shamino—who use a magic coin included in the game’s box—the Avatar arrives to find the land ruled by the tyrant Lord Blackthorn. Blackthorn enforces a twisted version of the Eight Virtues, imposing absurd edicts such as losing one’s tongue for lying, while the three Shadowlords terrorize the eight cities. After a sudden attack, the Avatar repels the Shadowlords with an amulet and brings a wounded Shamino to Iolo’s hut, where he learns that Lord British vanished on an Underworld expedition and Blackthorn’s rule is corrupted by the Shadowlords.

The Shadowlords are fragments of Mondain’s Gem of Immortality, embodying Falsehood, Hatred and Cowardice—the opposites of the Avatar’s virtues of Truth, Love and Courage. Their presence has poisoned Blackthorn’s reign.

With help from old and new allies, the Avatar forms the Warriors of Destiny to defeat the Shadowlords, undermine Blackthorn’s tyranny, and rescue Lord British, restoring the true balance to Ultima: Warriors of Destiny.
