Summary
Ultima: Warriors of Destiny, the NES incarnation of the classic Ultima V, arrives as a trimmed‑down take on the original 1988 release. Origin’s 1993 port trims the intro, slashes the soundtrack to a handful of tunes, and pares back the detailed character sprites, leaving movement noticeably clunky and slow. Even the infamous swamp zones become simplified poison fields, a visual shortcut that underscores the weaker engine. Compared with the earlier NES conversions of Ultima III and IV, this version feels notably less polished—both in graphics fidelity and gameplay responsiveness. Still, for retro collectors the title offers a glimpse into how an ambitious PC RPG was reshaped to fit the 8‑bit constraints of the Nintendo system.
Storyline
Summoned back to Britannia, the Avatar arrives with his mastered powers after the events of the previous title. He finds the kingdom under the fist of Lord Blackthorn, who seized control while Lord British vanished on an Underworld expedition. Blackthorn enforces a rigid, twisted interpretation of the Eight Virtues, imposing cruel edicts that punish even minor infractions. The Avatar is greeted by Shamino, who is quickly wounded by an attack from the three Shadowlords.
The Shadowlords—embodiments of Falsehood, Hatred and Cowardice—originated from three shards of Mondain’s Gem of Immortality. Their arrival follows the Avatar’s initial repulse using a magical amulet, a feat that cannot be repeated later in the game. Blackthorn employs these malevolent beings to terrorize Britannia’s eight cities, spreading chaos across the land. Their presence corrupts Blackthorn’s rule and deepens the kingdom’s suffering.
With Iolo’s guidance and the aid of old and new allies, the Avatar forms the Warriors of Destiny, as seen in Ultima: Warriors of Destiny. Together they aim to defeat the Shadowlords, undermine Blackthorn’s tyrannical regime, and rescue Lord British. Magic coin included in the game’s box serves as summons that brings the Avatar back to realm. Heroes strive to restore virtues and return Britannia to peace.
