Summary

Ultima: Exodus was the series’ first foray onto the NES, delivering a completely self‑contained experience separate from the computer entries. You can either let the system randomly build a party or invest time crafting a roster from eleven classes and five races, each advancing independently to level 25. The port introduces animated sprites, a richer musical score and solid‑3D dungeon sections that weren’t possible on the original Apple II. Gameplay tweaks include a brand‑new menu layout, expanded dialogue trees and the ability to bribe, steal or fight townsfolk. Travel isn’t limited to foot; you can ride a horse or board a boat, the latter necessary to reach the final island. Even the physical components were altered: a compact instruction booklet replaced the hefty manual and map bundle, and a new end‑game cut‑scene closes the adventure.

Storyline

After Ultima II: The Revenge of the Enchantress took place on Earth, Ultima: Exodus brings the adventure back to the original world of Sosaria. The mastermind behind the threat is Exodus, a hybrid creation of the rogue wizards Minax and Mondain that is described as neither human nor machine, resembling a sentient computer.
Lord British summons the player to stop Exodus, who is terrorizing the Isle of Fire. The hero’s journey leads through the lost land of Ambrosia, deep dungeon complexes, and a hunt for the mysterious Time Lord, while gathering powerful magical branding marks.
To finally defeat Exodus the player must locate four magic “punch” cards and insert them into the mainframe at Exodus’s altar in the correct sequence. The game ends instantly upon success, prompting a final screen that asks the player to “REPORT THY VICTORY!” to Origin.
