Summary
Ufouria: The Saga, often just called Ufouria, drops you into a free‑roaming NES world of outdoors, caves, and water‑logged rooms where every zone feels handcrafted. The game lets you swap among four quirky friends, each with a unique ability that opens previously unreachable platforms—a mechanic that feels a lot like the early Metroid or Blaster Master explorations. The European release is a collector’s dream: the story, character names, and sprites were altered, bird enemies now drop heavy weights instead of the original …, and the PAL cartridge’s music actually speeds up on a NTSC system. Sunsoft pulled the plug on a North American launch, reportedly because the mascot‑style cast was deemed too odd, so the only official copies exist in Europe and Australia. A leaked NTSC prototype and a fan‑made English translation finally let us experience the game as originally intended, cementing its cult‑status today.
Storyline
Ufouria: The Saga offers two distinct storylines depending on the region. In the original Japanese version, the penguin‑like hero Hebe sets out to rescue his teammates Ō‑Chan, Sukezaemon and Jennifer, who were lost in a time‑space rift during a massive war, so they can defeat the alien Unyohn and return to their homeworlds.
The Western localization follows Bop‑Louie and his friends Freeon‑Leon, Shades and Gil, a quirky 21st‑century family living in the world of Ufouria. After Bop‑Louie discovers a mysterious crater and his friends fall inside, he too is drawn in and loses his memory. He must locate the three amnesiac companions, who mistakenly view him as a threat, then together collect three keys by beating guardians, open a gate, and finally confront Unyohn.
