Summary

U.S. Championship V'Ball, released in the West as Super Spike V'Ball, lets you pick from four quirky pairs – the balanced George and Murphy, the power‑heavy Al and John, the Double‑Dragon twins Billy and Jimmy, or the speedy Ed and Michael. The NES version expands the arcade’s single‑player tournament into three distinct modes: a simple Exercise match, the five‑stop American Circuit, and a hard‑core World Cup that pits you against teams from Japan to the USSR. Hidden beneath the menu are four female teams that only appear when a cheat device unlocks them, though their icons glitch into garbled sprites. An arranged soundtrack by Takashi Furukawa and friends was issued in Japan, and the game even rode the back of the Super Spike V'Ball/Nintendo World Cup multicart that shipped with the NES Sports Set in late 1990.

Storyline

In U.S. Championship V'Ball you step into the shoes of two laid‑back beach bums, George and Michael, who earn their keep by challenging locals to volleyball matches. One day they spot a flyer advertising a nationwide beach‑volleyball tournament with a staggering $2,500,000 cash prize, prompting them to enter the competition. The Japanese version, titled U.S. Championship Beach Volley: V'Ball, even opens with a short cut‑scene that lays out this premise.
