Summary

Playing Transformers: Mystery of Convoy feels like stepping into a retro tie‑in that never quite got the balance right. You pilot Ultra Magnus, blasting through scrolling corridors while the car‑carrier mode lets you slip through tight gaps and dodge enemy fire, and rescuing Bumblebee in a few levels unlocks hidden Warp Zones. Power‑ups can widen your shot or even grant temporary flight, but the real trick is learning when to stay in robot form and when to shift into vehicle mode.

The game sprinkles a secret unlock for Rodimus Prime: collect the letters R‑O‑D‑I‑M‑U‑S scattered across most stages (levels 3, 6 and 10 are deliberately empty). Oddly, his robot sprite is just Ultra Magnus recolored, but the vehicle graphics are unique. Each of the nine stages ends with a massive Decepticon emblem, and the boss roster includes Menasor, Bruticus, a surprisingly early Megatron, and the final showdown with Trypticon (known in Japan as Dinosaurer). The difficulty spikes dramatically, especially in the maze‑like ninth level that will loop forever unless you follow a precise pattern.

Critics have been merciless: 1UP called it the "perfect example of a shameless tie‑in," citing its punishing difficulty and clumsy transformation mechanic. Even today the game is remembered more for its frustration than its fandom, making it a notorious footnote in NES history.

Storyline

Transformers – Comvoy no Nazo (often just called Comvoy no Nazo) puts the Autobot Ultra Magnus in the driver’s seat. The game’s premise revolves around a mystery: who killed Optimus Prime, known in Japan as Convoy, a question left unanswered because the 1986 film never reached Japanese theaters until years later.

Ultra Magnus battles his way through a series of Decepticon strongholds, searching for clues about Convoy’s whereabouts and the identity of his assassin. The title was designed to fill the narrative gap for Japanese fans, turning the unanswered death into a playable investigation. Players experience a classic side‑scroll action adventure while uncovering the hidden killer.
