Summary
When the 1992 Summer Olympics lit up Barcelona, the NES got its own sporty makeover: Track & Field in Barcelona. This European re‑release swapped the generic arcade title for a nod to the host city, but the core gameplay stayed true to its roots. The moment you power up, Vangelis’s soaring "Chariots of Fire" theme greets you, the same triumphant melody that once played on the arcade high‑score screen.
The control scheme is delightfully simple yet demanding: two rapid‑press "run" buttons propel your athlete forward, while a single "action" button handles jumps, throws, and sprints. The original arcade’s later trackball was never needed here, keeping the button‑mashing experience pure and nostalgic for anyone who loved the classic six‑event lineup.
Storyline
Track & Field in Barcelona (often just called Track & Field) pits the player against a series of Olympic‑style contests set in the Spanish city. The 100‑meter dash is won by rapidly alternating the run button, while the long jump requires the same rhythm plus a timed press to set the optimal 42‑degree launch angle. In the javelin throw the runner’s button mash builds speed and a well‑timed action press locks in a 43‑degree angle for maximum distance. The 110‑meter hurdles combine button‑alternating sprinting with precise action presses to clear each hurdle, and the hammer throw starts with a single run‑button press followed by a timed action press to achieve the ideal 45‑degree release. Finally, the high jump lets the computer set the run speed; the player holds the action button to choose the jump angle and can add extra height by rapidly pressing the run button while airborne.
