Summary
Total Recall drops you into the shoes of Douglas Quaid as he scrambles across a series of gritty, side‑scrolling stages. Each level throws a mix of brawling and vehicle sections at you, so you’ll find yourself punching through henchmen one moment and revving up a hover‑car the next. The core loop is simple but unforgiving: you have a single shot at clearing a stage, and any loss of energy—whether from enemy fire or environmental hazards—ends the run instantly.
Energy isn’t completely scarce, though. Scattered throughout the stages are health‑boosting pills or, on some platforms, a pulsing heart that restores your stamina and lets you push further. The game also tacks on a collect‑the‑items goal in most action segments, rewarding careful exploration before you can move on. This blend of relentless combat, occasional driving thrills, and tight resource management gives the NES version of Total Recall a tense, arcade‑style feel that keeps you on edge from start to finish.
Storyline
Total Recall on the NES follows Doug Quaid, a mild‑mannered construction worker living with his gorgeous wife in a sleek apartment on a futuristic Earth. Restless dreams of the red planet drive him to Rekall, Inc., where he pays for a commercial memory implant promising a Martian vacation that is “cheaper, better, and safer than the real thing.” The procedure unexpectedly awakens buried memories of Quaid’s true identity as a secret agent for the Martian government. Suddenly hunted by his former employers, he is forced to battle across Earth and onto the surface of Mars. The game’s storyline pits his reclaimed past against a relentless pursuit, as he fights to secure his future.
