Summary

The NES version of Thunderbirds, simply titled Thunderbirds on the cartridge, arrived on the Nintendo console in 1990 courtesy of Activision. It translates the beloved TV series into a side‑scrolling adventure that lets players pilot the iconic International Rescue machines across a series of daring missions. Though the game never made a huge splash in the U.S., its quirky blend of platforming and vehicle control has turned it into a modest collector’s curiosity among retro fans.

Storyline

In the NES title Thunderbirds, the villainous alien Hood demands that the Thunderbirds hand over all of their vehicles within a 60‑day window, threatening to rain meteors down on Earth if they refuse. The heroes suspect Hood needs the full period to power his scheme, so they set out to locate hidden energy sources across the globe. The game’s map spans North America, the Indian Ocean and Asia, each region offering its own set of missions.

Players can pilot five futuristic craft, including the Mach‑20 Thunderbird 1 Rocket, the Neptune Hydro‑Turbojet and the Fire Flash Atomic plane. Each vehicle endures only three hits before being grounded, and a grounded craft requires three in‑game days to repair—time that is deducted from the overall 60‑day deadline. Successful missions reward power‑ups such as health restoration, boosted firepower, or orbital support ships that fly alongside the main craft.

The roster of foes is eclectic, ranging from poisonous space scorpions and mutant sea worms to environmental hazards like fire‑spitting volcanoes. Defeating these enemies not only clears the path but also fuels the Thunderbirds’ quest to thwart Hood’s meteor assault.
