Summary

Stepping into the shoes of Indiana Jones on the NES feels like a condensed flash‑tour of his early exploits. The side‑scrolling platformer drops you into a Mexican Civil War skirmish before whisking you off to the muddy trenches of the Western Front and finally the heart of a German war‑machine headquarters, with each locale culminating in a themed boss like Pancho Villa or the massive artillery piece Big Bertha.

Your only tool at the start is Indy’s whip; every destroyed box drops a new weapon—dynamite, daggers, grenades, or guns—and each possession doubles as a health bar. Lose a weapon to damage and you’re forced to brawl with your fists, with another hit proving fatal. A standout mid‑game segment pairs you with Canadian ace Billy Bishop for a dogfight against the Red Baron, adding aerial chaos to the ground‑based action.

Nintendo Power lauded the variety of set‑pieces, but critics noted the graphics felt dated and the controls unforgiving. AllGame gave it a modest 2½‑star rating, praising the cutscenes and sprite work while calling the music and sound effects plain and the difficulty steep.

Storyline

In The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles for NES, young Indy lands in war‑torn Mexico where he frees peasants captured by Pancho Villa’s bandits. After defeating Villa, he learns of a thief called the Claw who has stolen the Egyptian Jackal artifact. The chase leads Indy into an abandoned silver mine, where the Claw attacks from a scaffold with dynamite and Indy uses falling rocks to overcome him.

Indy then hops on a boat to Europe and enlists for World I. He battles across a chaotic battlefield, takes on a massive tank, and discovers the giant artillery piece Big Bertha, which he climbs and destroys. Promoted to Captain, he is sent to Germany to stop a commander planning poison‑gas attacks.

In Germany Indy boards an enemy train, fights the engineer, and is rescued by a friendly fighter pilot who helps him shoot down enemy aircraft and duel the Red Baron. Finally, Indy infiltrates the German High Command fortress, defeats the commander and his battle tank with grenades, navigates a poison‑gas lab, plants a bomb, and escapes as the facility explodes.
