Summary
Tetris 2, known in Japan as Tetris Flash, twists the classic falling‑block formula by turning color matching into the core challenge. Instead of clearing full lines, you line up three same‑hued squares and watch them vanish, a mechanic that feels oddly familiar to Dr. Mario. The tetrominos themselves are quirky – some of their squares only touch at the corners, which adds a subtle spatial puzzle on top of the hue‑matching. Critics weren’t kind to the NES version: Famitsu gave it a modest 21/40, Electronic Gaming Monthly’s reviewers averaged around 6‑7/10 and slammed the graphics as sub‑par, while Game Players rated it just 52%. Despite the lukewarm press, the game proved a commercial surprise, topping NES sales in the United States in January 1994 and dominating the UK market for eight months that year, from March through November.
