Summary
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Arcade Game you can grab any of the four heroes – Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello or Raphael – either from an on‑screen select screen or, in some arcade cabinets, by inserting your coin into the matching slot. Up to four players can team up, each guiding their Turtle with an eight‑way joystick, a jump button and an attack button.
Each Turtle feels distinct: Donatello swings slower but reaches farther, Michelangelo and Raphael strike fast with a tighter range, and Leonardo balances speed and reach. Pressing jump and attack together triggers a character‑specific special – Raphael rolls and kicks, while the others perform a sweeping weapon‑jump – and certain areas let you spring off walls to surprise foes. Hitting traffic cones, fire hydrants or exploding oil drums can turn the environment into a weapon, and slamming enemies into walls speeds up their defeat.
The roster of Foot Soldiers is color‑coded to hint at their attack patterns, and the boss line‑up includes the classic Rocksteady, Bebop, Baxter Stockman, Granitor, General Traag, Krang and Shredder. The NES port adds two exclusive stages and new bosses – a polar‑bear‑like Tora and a robotic samurai Shogun – while swapping the original Bebop‑Rocksteady showdown for a mutated fly‑form Baxter Stockman in the parking‑garage level.
A quirky bit of 90s nostalgia is the Pizza Hut product placement: the NES cartridge’s rear cover even offered a coupon valid through December 31 1991, and the game also appeared on Nintendo’s PlayChoice‑10 arcade system.
Storyline
In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II – The Arcade Game, Shredder kidnaps both April O'Neil and the turtles' mentor, Master Splinter, forcing the heroes to launch a frantic rescue. The Foot Clan has been upgraded with a ruthless new breed of over 700 Taekwondo‑trained turtle terminators, turning the streets into a gauntlet of merciless soldiers. Adding to the danger, Shredder hires two alien bounty hunters, Tora and Shogun, who have never known defeat. Master Splinter has prepared his sons with radical new attack moves, but the mission is far from a piece of cake—or even a slice of pizza. The turtles must battle through the upgraded Foot Soldiers and the alien duo to save April and put an end to Shredder’s revenge.
