Summary
Takeshi's Challenge, the off‑beat action‑adventure that bears Beat Takeshi’s name, drops you into the shoes of a down‑on‑his‑luck salaryman who chases a hidden treasure on a far‑flung South‑Sea island. The game feels like a side‑scrolling brawler at first glance, but every choice you make nudges the story forward like an adventure title, and even shooter segments pop up when you least expect them. What makes the title unforgettable is its willingness to lean into absurdity: you can only heal by sipping tequila at a Japanese bar or by crashing in a hotel on the island, and a desperate revival is triggered by slamming A + B three times in rapid succession. The second controller’s microphone isn’t a gimmick—it’s used for karaoke‑style challenges and even to shout "Come out!" to reveal a treasure map. If you’re feeling particularly manic, punching the title screen thirty‑two thousand seven hundred twenty times whisks you straight to the final stage. Despite its eccentric design, the game moved roughly 800,000 units, a figure Taito proudly cites. It resurfaced on the Wii Virtual Console in 2009, and a 2017 mobile remake titled Chōsenjō From Beat Takeshi added a brand‑new American stage and fresh Zuntata tracks, proving the quirky classic still has a place in today’s retro‑gaming conversation.
Storyline
In Takeshi no Chousenjou (known in the West as Takeshi's Challenge), the protagonist is a down‑on‑his‑luck salaryman who suddenly receives a mysterious treasure map. Before he can set sail for Hintabo Island, he must first defeat the old man who handed him the map, quit his job, divorce his wife, and pick up a handful of odd skills at a local culture centre. If any of these conditions are left undone, his wife or his company president will appear and force him back to Japan, or the old man will intercept the treasure, ending the game. Once the prerequisites are met, the salaryman travels the world and even takes part in professional gambling and street fights. One of the most memorable stages has him hang‑gliding from Hintabo Island toward the hidden treasure while blasting at birds and UFOs.
