Summary

Super Turrican for the NES feels like a solo‑crafted love letter to the first two Turrican titles, yet it carries its own quirks. Manfred Trenz handled the entire development himself, even composing the soundtrack with a driver originally written by David Whittaker and then tweaked for the console. Gameplay borrows heavily from Turrican II, but the addition of a run button and the ability to leap out of the Gyroscope mid‑air give the player a surprising amount of agility – the Gyroscope even ricochets off enemies now. Four difficulty settings, a fire‑button‑run boost, and the removal of both time limits and checkpoints force you to restart a level from the beginning after each death, raising the stakes. Trenz later admitted the rushed schedule left him feeling the game lacked some classic elements, but critics in Europe still praised the title, and its final boss even nods to the game Aldynes.

Storyline

Super Turrican for the NES uses the same basic story premise found in the instruction manual of Turrican II: The Final Fight, though the actual introductory sequence tells a slightly different tale set on the fictional planet Landorin.

A long time ago, brave rebellious fighters destroyed the menacing hordes of The Machine and its tyranny‑spreading satellite that circled Landorin. The evil moon was eliminated, yet the Machine continued to dominate the planet’s surface, forcing the Landorins to retreat into the inner core to await their inevitable death.

Machines and mutants now roam the deserted ruins in search of secret caves. Before fleeing, the Landorins broadcast a desperate radio signal across the tri‑solar system. That cry was heard by a courageous hero named Turrican, who embarks on his most dangerous adventure to free the last survivors of Landorin.
