Summary
Super Dodge Ball for the NES still feels like a blast from the ‘80s playground. I love how the game gives every team a captain with a special “Power Shot” that rockets across the court, while the rest of the squad can pass, catch and even duck incoming throws using just two buttons. The two‑player mode lets friends duke it out with the same fast‑paced dodging, and the 1989 port added quirky twists – stat sheets for each player, a “Bean Ball” minigame, and two new nations (India and the USSR).
The soundtrack even changes by country: the Japan stage hums “Sakura Sakura,” and the England arena blends “Get Back” with “A Hard Day’s Night.” With bright, multi‑dimensional graphics and three difficulty ramps, the NES version balances arcade chaos and strategic play, making every match a chance to thrash the opposition and chase that angel‑floating loser off the screen.
Storyline
The game opens with a showdown between Dallas and Chicago to decide who will carry the United States into the global dodge‑ball cup. In single‑player mode you control Dallas while the computer runs Chicago; in two‑player mode the first player is Dallas and the second is Chicago.
After winning that qualifier, Dallas travels to the world tournament and must beat England, Iceland, China, Africa (Kenya in later revisions) and Japan in succession. Each foreign squad fields more than four members, but only four appear on the court at a time; fallen players are replaced by reserves.
Defeating Japan crowns the team with the world cup, presented by a ninja, and the cycle restarts with a new match against England.
