Summary

Super Contra, known in the West as Super C, expands the classic run‑and‑gun formula with a mix of side‑scrolling and top‑down stages. Bill Rizer now wears green and Lance Bean sports purple, and both can jump at variable heights by nudging the joystick up or down while pressing jump. The game introduces four weapon types—machine gun, spread gun, bomb gun and laser—that upgrade when the same power‑up is collected twice, and a “hyper shell” that clears the screen can be stocked and fired at any moment during the overhead levels.

The arcade version’s five stages alternate between side‑scrolling bases, jungle, and alien lair sections, while the NES port adds three exclusive vertically‑scrolling stages—a high‑tech base, a mountain, and an alien nest—reordering bosses and even presenting a new final foe. Power‑ups mirror the original Contra’s icons, but the fire‑ball now launches a large, chargeable projectile that explodes on impact, and the familiar Rapid Bullets, Barrier and Special items return.

Continuing is more forgiving: each player can resume instantly without waiting for the partner to lose all lives, though the total number of credits available depends on the machine’s DIP settings. The Japanese version hides a stage‑select cheat that the Western releases stripped out, while the Famicom and NES editions include a separate code that grants thirty or ten lives respectively. The PAL market received the game as Probotector II, swapping human protagonists for robots, and the title has resurfaced on numerous virtual consoles, the NES Classic, and the Contra Anniversary Collection, keeping the retro thrill alive for new generations.

Storyline

Super Contra (often called Super C) picks up a year after Bill and Lance’s clash with the Red Falcon Organization. This time the alien menace has seized an allied military base, hijacking the minds of its soldiers, so the duo must battle former comrades‑in‑arms as well as a new, mutated strain of the alien creatures they previously faced.

After their earlier defeat, Red Falcon returns stronger, having recruited the demented alien Jagger Froid from the Black Hole Galaxy and deploying the Babula Destructoid Mechanism equipped with a deadly Beam of Death. His sinister scheme is to infiltrate the U.S. Army’s ranks, seeping alien warriors into the brains of the troops and unleashing eight levels of terror, from radioactive lava fields to other deadly environments.

Earth’s only hope rests on Scorpion and Dogster—Bill and Lance—who must wield spread guns, lasers, flamethrowers and mega‑shells to stop Red Falcon’s plan before the world is reduced to screaming, disintegrating ruin.
