Summary
Super Contra II is a fan‑made hack that completely rewrites the classic Contra formula, turning the familiar run‑and‑gun into a surprisingly brutal test of patience. The Jungle stage, for example, has bridges that no longer explode and water sections where a single jump can catapult you to a completely different part of the pool, making navigation feel like a puzzle. Base levels now fill the entire screen, the objectives are shuffled – and some are even invisible – while the enemy placements remain stubbornly faithful to the original.
Bosses have been re‑designed and weapon targets fire at a noticeably higher rate, so every encounter feels tighter and more unforgiving. On the bright side, the hack grants five lives instead of three and lets you keep the weapon you were holding when you die, a small mercy in an otherwise relentless gauntlet. The audiovisual package is identical to the NES original, except the title screen drops the Contra logo and Konami copyright, and the Base tiles look markedly different despite using the same graphics.
Critics and players alike have labeled the experience “almost unplayable,” noting that the new layout pushes difficulty to an extreme level. If you’re looking for a not‑so‑normal Contra challenge, Super Contra II delivers it in spades, but be prepared for a steep learning curve that will test even seasoned retro gamers.
