Summary

Sqoon bursts onto the NES as a fast‑paced side‑scrolling shooter that puts you behind a quirky submarine battling hordes of marine foes. Irem’s 1986 release captures the era’s pixel‑perfect chaos, letting you glide across scrolling ocean depths while dodging hostile creatures and firing a never‑ending barrage. The game’s tight controls make the undersea action feel responsive, and the vibrant 8‑bit sprites add a dash of charm to every encounter. Though it never reached the same fame as Irem’s other titles, Sqoon remains a solid hidden gem for anyone hunting retro naval mayhem on the original Nintendo system.

Storyline

In the NES title Sqoon, a race of alien overlords from Neptune discovers that their favorite food—"man‑ham livestock"—has run out. To satisfy their hunger they melt Earth’s polar ice caps, flooding continents and forcing humanity into crisis. The Earth Defense Army’s General sends a desperate SOS to the pirate Narikeen, urging him to pilot his advanced submarine, the Sqoon, against the invaders.

Narikeen, initially scoffing at the plea, reluctantly agrees to strike back. In the Japanese version the distress call is framed as a Pentagon transmission, but the core plot remains: the submarine’s mission is to dive into the flooded world and eradicate the Neptunian threat, restoring peace for the surviving humans.
