Summary

Spot: The Video Game turns the classic Othello/Reversi concept into a bright, 7‑up‑themed puzzle for the NES. Played on a 7×7 grid, up to four participants—human or CPU—control spots of a single colour, starting from opposite corners. On each turn you either “reproduce” a piece into an adjacent empty square or make a jump two squares away, sacrificing the original spot. After the move, every piece touching the new location flips to your colour, turning the board into a fast‑moving tug‑of‑war.

What sets Spot apart is its animated mascot; the little green Spot skates, dives or does a cartwheel as it slides across the board, giving each move a playful flair. The NES version was cranked out in just six weeks without any development hardware, a fact designer Graeme Devine proudly recalled. A quirky mail‑in promo let players buy the cartridge for $24.99 and receive four labels from specially marked 7‑Up bottles, reinforcing the soda‑sponsored vibe.

Critics responded warmly—Electronic Gaming Monthly scored it 7‑8 out of 10, praising its cute graphics and quick, multiplayer‑friendly gameplay. Computer Gaming World highlighted its simple concept, long shelf life, and the delight it brings to a group gathered around a single console.
