Summary
Solstice dazzles with an isometric view that feels fresh on the NES. I guide Shadax, a wizard armed only with a jump, beakers of potions and, later, magic elfin boots that boost his leap. The game’s 250 rooms are packed with spikes, conveyor belts, vanishing bridges and floating mines, plus trolls, giant spiders and demons that must be outwitted rather than killed. Potions let you turn invincible, freeze time, reveal hidden objects or blast away moving hazards – and you can stack them while you stay in a room. Hidden magic keys, crystal‑ball platforms and detachable blocks turn every space into a puzzle to rearrange. The on‑screen map and inventory keep track of visited rooms and collected items, while blue hats add extra lives and coins act as a continue buffer. Tim Follin’s dark, atmospheric score and the hand‑drawn master map give the title a Knight‑Lore vibe that still feels distinctive. Even after years, the brain‑twisting challenges hold their charm.
Storyline
Solstice: The Quest for the Staff of Demnos begins on the night of the winter solstice when the dark warlord Morbius the Malevolent abducts Princess Eleanor of Arcadia for a sacrificial ritual that would crown him the Evil Baron of Darkness. Witnessing the kidnapping, the wizard Shadax discovers a secret entrance to Morbius’ fortress Kâstleröck while researching the stronghold in the Library of Arcadia. He also learns that the legendary Staff of Demnos, hidden inside the castle, has been shattered into six invisible pieces that only become visible once every hundred years—exactly on the solstice. Armed with this knowledge, Shadax infiltrates the citadel, reassembles the staff, and confronts Morbius.
After restoring the Staff of Demnos, Shadax frees Princess Eleanor from her imprisonment and uses the weapon’s power to destroy Morbius and his forces of darkness. The hero’s success ends the threat to Arcadia and restores peace just as the solstice night gives way to dawn.
