Summary
Solomon’s Key 2, known in the West as Fire ’n Ice, is a brain‑teasing NES title that asks you to help Dana snuff out flames by shaping ice. Each level is a tidy grid where you can walk, climb a single‑high block, push sliding ice slabs and, most importantly, conjure ice that appears beneath you and to either side – a mechanic that feels oddly like Lode Runner. When an ice block lands next to a wall, pipe, jar or another block it sticks, letting you build bridges or trap fire.
As you advance, new elements appear: pipes you can crawl through and jars that ignite when touched by flame. A burning jar blocks your path and instantly melts any ice placed above it, forcing you to rethink routes. The game packs ten worlds of ten stages each, and while the Japanese cartridge holds a save battery, the Western releases rely on passwords. Completing the hundred puzzles and beating the final boss, Druidle, reveals a cheat code that opens a sound test and fifty extra bonus stages.
A built‑in stage editor lets you craft your own challenges, though only the Japanese version lets you preserve them. Critics were split – some called the puzzles repetitive, others hailed it as the best logic game on the NES, noting its dated graphics but praising the deep, 15‑to‑30‑move planning required for later levels.
Storyline
Solomon's Key 2 (sometimes called Solomon's Key II) is set as a prequel to the original game, and the whole adventure is presented as a tale an elderly woman tells her grandchildren. The story unfolds on Coolmint Island, a frozen land inhabited by winter fairies. When the malevolent wizard Druidle unleashes flame monsters to melt the island, the fairy queen calls upon the apprentice wizard Dana, granting him ice magic to combat the fire‑breathing foes. Dana must clear a total of 100 stages, using his new powers to extinguish the flames and protect the island. After defeating Druidle at the end, the game rewards the player with a cheat code.
