Summary

Solomon's Key on the NES blends frantic platform action with brain‑teasing puzzles, putting you in the shoes of Dana, a lone sorcerer racing against a ticking clock. Each of the 50 rooms in "Constellation Space" is a maze of orange blocks you can summon or smash, while fireballs clear the relentless demons that appear at every turn. The game rewards careful planning: hidden items boost your firepower or grant extra lives, and secret seals unlock bonus rooms that change the ending.

The level structure is a celestial tour of the zodiac, with four stages per sign and a hidden bonus chamber for each constellation, plus three special rooms that appear only if you collect the elusive Seals of Solomon. In total the NES version houses 64 levels, including a final showdown in Solomon’s room. A unique GDV score at game over tallies your performance across time, items, and points, giving a clear picture of how efficiently you conquered the maze.

Developed by Tecmo, the game grew out of a Lode Runner‑style concept, then shifted toward puzzles after a boss’s suggestion. Designer Michitaka Tsuruta drew visual cues from Greek mythology and the film *Jason and the Argonauts*, while the title itself references the legendary Seal of Solomon that threads through every level.

Storyline

In the NES action‑puzzle game Solomon no Kagi (also known as Solomon's Key), the player controls Dana, a wizard from Lyrac. He is tasked with retrieving Solomon's Key in order to bring the world back to light after demons were accidentally released.

To achieve this, Dana must unlock Solomon's scroll of secrets and restore peace to the constellations. Using his magic, fire and other mystical powers, he works to free the imprisoned Princess of the Fairies and to harness the evil forces that lurk within the constellations. The key is the first step.
