Summary
Snow Brothers on the NES takes the classic arcade formula of Snow Bros. and adds a few quirky twists that make it feel fresh for home consoles. You play as the snow‑man twins, Nick in blue overalls and Tom in red, and your main tool is a snowball‑throwing gun. Enemies become encased in snow after a few hits, turning into rolling snowballs that bounce off walls and smash any foes in their path. If you manage to clear a stage with a single rolling snowball, a cascade of bonus money rains down, rewarding careful timing. Power‑up potions drop from defeated enemies, each color granting a distinct boost—speed, snow‑throw range, extra snow per shot, or a temporary balloon‑like flight that lets you glide over hazards. The game also throws in an invincible pumpkin head that appears when you dawdle, spawning untouchable ghosts that must be avoided. The NES version, released as Snow Brothers, even adds an opening cut‑scene that explains how the princes were cursed into snowmen by the demon King Scorch, giving the familiar arcade action a small narrative hook.
Storyline
In the NES version of Snow Bros., players take control of the snow‑man twins Nick and Tom as they battle through 50 stages to rescue the captured princesses. The story varies by region: in one version King Scorch curses the brothers, turning them into snowmen and kidnaps the princess twins Teri and Tina, while another tells of King Atchich of the hot‑filled Kingdom of Hotda abducting Snowland’s princesses, Puripuri and Puchipuchi. The villains have hoarded the princesses deep inside the 70‑storey stone fortress of Hotda Castle, a place riddled with fire‑breathing monsters that melt the snowmen’s icy nature. Determined to save their land from melting away, Nick and Tom brave the scorching stronghold, using their snow‑ball powers to defeat the king and his minions. Their quest ultimately restores the princesses and halts the kingdom’s thaw.
