Summary
Snake's Revenge, sometimes billed as Snake's Revenge: Metal Gear 2, is Konami’s Western‑focused sequel that arrived on the NES without Hideo Kojima’s input. The game expands the original’s top‑down infiltration with side‑view stages that feel like a stripped‑down Rush ’n Attack, letting you crawl, jump and plant explosives while still relying on the knife or handgun for combat. A notable tweak is the transceiver: instead of dialing frequencies you choose from three contacts—John, Nick and Jennifer—and a radar that only works outside alert mode. Your rank, capped at six stars, still hinges on rescuing hostages and interrogating officers with truth gas, rewarding you with higher health and carrying capacity. Development was handled by a Kobe‑based Konami team that included staff from Castlevania III, and despite Kojima’s later mixed comments, the title earned a surprisingly wide spread of review scores, from high marks in Joypad and Joystick to more modest ratings in Official Nintendo Magazine and Mean Machines.
Storyline
Three years after the original Metal Gear, FOXHOUND learns that a hostile Middle‑Eastern nation has obtained the Metal Gear plans and is building a new model. The agency assigns Lieutenant Solid Snake to lead a three‑man team on Operation 747.
Snake’s squad consists of John Turner, a former Navy intelligence operative, and Nick Myer, a Marine‑trained weapons and explosives specialist. Snake infiltrates the enemy’s jungle base while Turner sacrifices himself as a decoy, and later blows up a cargo ship’s ammunition cache before escaping with the help of the team’s helicopter pilot.
Inside the main base, Snake contacts double‑agent Jennifer, discovers an impostor posing as Turner, and after Nick is killed and Jennifer captured, confronts a cybernetically enhanced Big Boss. Snake defeats Big Boss, destroys the prototype Metal Gear 2, and rescues Jennifer. In the aftermath, the United Nations declares “World Peace Day,” Turner is listed MIA, and Myer receives three posthumous promotions. This storyline is the basis for the NES title Snake’s Revenge.
