Summary
The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man drops you into a four‑chapter, side‑scrolling quest where Bart’s alter‑ego, Bartman, must rescue the kidnapped hero Radioactive Man. You start with five life points, can refill them by snatching glowing radioactive signs, and gain a lightning‑bolt attack that shoots from Bart’s eyes when you collect the electric icons. Aside from punching and kicking, the levels are littered with traps and end‑of‑chapter showdowns against comic‑book villains like the Swamp Hag, Dr. Crab, Lava Man and the mastermind Brain‑O the Magnificent.
Critics were split: some praised the graphics and the extra challenge compared to earlier Simpsons NES titles, while others slammed the clunky controls, unforgiving jumps and the lack of a password system. 1UP even noted that the game missed a chance to parody comic eras, despite Matt Groening’s involvement in tweaking a character name during development. The Bartman craze was still fresh on merch shelves, giving the title a nostalgic hook even if the gameplay often felt more “average” than iconic.
Overall, the game feels like a love‑letter to comic‑book fans wrapped in a typical 8‑bit platformer shell—fun enough for a retro run, but not the breakthrough many hoped for when Bart’s cape first flew onto the market.
Storyline
In The Simpsons: Bartman Meets Radioactive Man for the NES, Bart Simpson is at home reading a Radioactive Man comic when the hero’s sidekick, Fallout Boy, bursts out of the pages. Fallout Boy warns Bart that Radioactive Man has been captured and locked in the black‑hole‑orbiting prison known as the Limbo Zone, and that Bart must dive into the comic‑book universe to rescue him. Inside the comic world, Bart transforms into his alter‑ego Bartman and battles three villains who have stolen Radioactive Man’s powers: the slime‑covered Swamp Hag, the evil Dr. Crab, and the hot‑headed Lava Man. After reclaiming those powers, Bartman locates Radioactive Man and teams up with him to take down the mastermind behind the plot, Brain‑O the Magnificent.
