Summary

I first stumbled on Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom and was instantly charmed by its cast of cartoon‑like anthropomorphic fruits and vegetables, with a few human faces like Princess Tomato’s sister Lisa and the mischievous Farmies adding a quirky contrast. The visual style feels like a living storybook, each screen painted in bright, pastel tones that invite you to explore the salad‑filled world.

The game plays like a text adventure stripped of a keyboard: every possible action is mapped to buttons that line the edges of the screen, so you issue commands by pressing A, B, Select or Start. Most of the experience is a series of static scenes, punctuated by “finger wars” duels, maze sections and occasional animated sprites such as the octoberry and fernbirds. The only real failure condition is losing the penultimate finger‑war against Minister Pumpkin.

Originally a 1984 Japanese computer title, it migrated to the Famicom in 1988 and reached the NES in 1991, later resurfacing on the Wii, 3DS and Wii U Virtual Console services. Each re‑release let a new generation of players experience its off‑beat charm without needing the original hardware.

Storyline

In the NES title Salad no Kuni no Tomato Hime (often called Tomato Princess), the peaceful Salad Kingdom is populated entirely by anthropomorphic foods. The kingdom’s stability shatters when the royal advisor, Minister Pumpkin, stages a coup and kidnaps Princess Tomato, driving King Broccoli to die of grief. Before his death, King Broccoli commissions Sir Cucumber, a brave knight, to rescue the princess and promises him Tomato’s hand in marriage if he succeeds.

Sir Cucumber sets out toward the foreboding Zucchini Mountains, determined to thwart Pumpkin and his minions, the Farmies, from seizing control of the realm. Along the journey he is joined by Percy, a baby persimmon sidekick, and receives support from a resistance led by Tomato’s younger brother, Prince Lettuce.

Together, the unlikely band of fruit and vegetable heroes battles through Pumpkin’s forces, aiming to restore peace to the Salad Kingdom and reunite the royal family.
