Summary

The NES title S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team (known as Final Mission in Japan) drops you into a high‑speed side‑scroller where you pilot a flying soldier and blast alien forces from eight directions. In one‑player you pick the masculine Arnold or the female Sigourney, while in two‑player Arnold is Player 1 and Sigourney is Player 2, and there is no gameplay advantage to either. The duo is flanked by two satellite modules that fire simultaneously with your gun; by holding A you can lock them into a fixed orbit or toggle between their default rotating mode. The screen scrolls automatically in both horizontal and vertical stages, echoing Capcom’s Forgotten Worlds in look and pacing.
Power‑ups appear as letter icons, supplying a laser, wide beam, bomb launcher, speed boost or extra life, and the ship begins with six hit points and unlimited continues. Japanese version Final Mission is tougher – you start with six lives, lose upgrades when hit and must manually align satellites – while the western release eased difficulty and introduced a pre‑stage map. The soundtrack, composed by Kiyohiro Sada, remains a standout, praised for its energetic chiptune melodies that match the relentless action. The game also appeared later on Virtual Console, Wii U, Switch and 3DS, keeping its arcade‑like intensity accessible to modern retro fans.

Storyline

In 2029, an army of alien invaders led by the ruthless Vile Malmort has seized the ruins of New York City. They erected a massive “Astrotube” that links the devastated streets to a looming space station, allowing troops and weaponry to pour through at will. To counter this threat, the government formed the Special Cybernetic Attack Team, known as SCAT, a squad of part‑human, part‑machine soldiers equipped with advanced cybernetic gear.
The game S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team follows this elite unit as they battle across the broken metropolis, dismantling the Astrotube and confronting Malmort’s forces. Each mission pushes the hybrid warriors to the edge, blending platform action with sci‑fi drama in a desperate fight for humanity’s survival.
