Summary

Rolling Thunder lets you slip behind doors and crates for cover, turning a side‑scroll shoot‑'em‑up into a tense cat‑and‑mouse chase. You start with a pistol that can be swapped for a rapid‑fire submachine gun resembling a real‑world Beretta M12, and ammo is scavenged from marked rooms; once you run out you’re reduced to a single, slow “chaser” bullet at a time. The game’s enemies are a colorful roster of hooded Maskers—some tossing grenades, others kneeling to fire—plus ninjas, bat‑like Gelzos, panthers, shrieking Blogas and lava‑men that keep the action unpredictable. Each of the ten stages is split into two “stories,” with the second half remixing the first’s layout, adding tougher traps and altered enemy placements for a fresh challenge. The NES port adds a password system, hidden bonuses and a secret harder mission, while the original arcade version lives on in numerous Namco Museum collections and the Switch’s Arcade Archives series.

Storyline

You play as Albatross, a top operative of the WCPO’s Rolling Thunder espionage unit – the world’s most powerful secret police force. Your objective is to halt an underground conspiracy that threatens global domination and to rescue the missing female agent Leila Blitz, who has been seized by the secret society Geldra in New York. After each stage, a large in‑game monitor flashes scenes of Leila’s capture and the torture she endures, reminding you why the mission matters. The climax pits you against the Geldra leader, Maboo, in a final showdown where defeating him frees Leila and brings the operation to a successful close.
