Summary
Roger Clemens' MVP Baseball lets you step into the shoes of one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers, even though the game can’t use real MLB team names or player surnames. Instead, 26 teams sport altered nicknames and a roster of cleverly altered monikers—Bash brothers become M. Bash and J. Bash, Barry Bonds turns into "Barris," and Cal Ripken Jr. is listed as "Nekpir," just to name a few. The result is a nostalgic puzzle where you can instantly recognize who’s who without ever seeing an official logo.
What really sets the NES version apart is the camera shift after you swing. Once the ball is in the air, the view jumps to an out‑field perspective, forcing you to adjust to a different set of controls than the typical side‑on batting screens of R.B.I. Baseball or MLB. The season mode stretches over a full schedule—complete with a password system to keep your progress—so you can chase a playoff berth while Clemens himself pops up with tips between innings.
Kingsley Thurber, the composer behind the game’s soundtrack, also supplied music for titles like Super NES Mortal Kombat, Virtual Bart and several WWF games, giving the soundtrack a surprisingly polished feel for a baseball title.
Critics were mixed: Electronic Gaming Monthly gave it a spread of 5‑7 out of 10, noting that the fielding angles made tracking the ball’s shadow confusing and that the overall feel lagged behind contemporaries such as Bases Loaded 2. Still, the quirky name jokes and the chance to manage a 1991‑style season keep it a memorable footnote in retro baseball gaming.
