Summary
Rod Land on the NES is a curious twist on the original arcade platformer. While the arcade fairy can only summon ladders, the Nintendo port lets you actually jump, and it sneaks in a handful of extra platform stages that weren’t in the coin‑op. The game was handled by The Sales Curve’s London team – Simon Pick, Jools Watsham and Steve Snake – and, unlike most other home versions, only saw releases in Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Japan.
Because the cartridge had to work on 8‑bit hardware, the audio was re‑synthesised and a few glitches from the arcade were ironed out. Players still capture floating monsters with a wand, trap them in a force‑field, and slam them until they melt into power‑ups, preserving the original’s frantic charm while offering the subtle advantage of a jump.
Storyline
In Rod Land, two fairy sisters embark on a daring quest to rescue their mother, who is imprisoned in a towering spire. Their journey is intermittently guided by the spirit of their departed father, who appears at crucial moments to offer hints and encouragement. The sequel expands the adventure, sending the sisters into an ancient pyramid where an evil demon is assembling a mobile fortress. The demon’s sinister plans are linked to the tragedy that claimed their father, implying his death was caused by the very foe they now confront. Together, the games weave a narrative of family, bravery, and the fight against a rising darkness.
