Summary
Mega Man 3 (known as Rockman 3 in Japan) is a classic NES side‑scrolling platformer that lets you pick any of eight Robot Master stages and snatch their signature weapons for later use. Each boss fight feels distinct, and the weapons you collect become the key to cracking the next level’s puzzle.
The game introduced a handful of mechanics that still feel fresh: Rush can morph into a coil for higher jumps, a jet for brief flight, or a marine for underwater navigation, while Mega Man’s new slide move lets you dodge hazards with style. Hidden E‑Tanks restore full health, and a password system lets you resume after a long session. After the main eight, you return to four mining sites to battle Doc Robots that inherit the abilities you’ve already earned.
Development was a crunch‑filled sprint; artist Keiji Inafune recalled the pressure of meeting a tight deadline, and fan submissions even shaped the Robot Master roster. Yasuaki Fujita’s soundtrack carries the game’s energetic vibe, and the title moved over a million units, earning praise for its graphics, music, and the new features—Proto Man, Rush, and the slide—that have become series staples.
Storyline
Mega Man 3 (known as Rockman 3 in Japan) is set in an unspecified year of the 21st century, after the events of Mega Man 2. Dr. Wily, claiming to have reformed, teams up with Dr. Light to build a peace‑keeping robot called Gamma. Suddenly eight Robot Masters—Top Man, Shadow Man, Spark Man, Magnet Man, Hard Man, Snake Man, Gemini Man and Needle Man—go berserk and steal Gamma’s eight power crystals, prompting Mega Man and his canine sidekick Rush to hunt them down across mining worlds. During the quest Mega Man repeatedly clashes with a mysterious masked foe, Break Man, whose abilities match his own. After defeating the eight masters, Mega Man returns to four mining sites to battle eight Doc Robots that inherit the powers of the masters he just beat. Wily then betrays Dr. Light, seizes Gamma and retreats to a new fortress; Mega Man destroys Gamma, defeats Wily, and as the fortress collapses Break Man appears, saves him and is revealed to be Mega Man’s older brother, Proto Man.
