Summary
Rockin' Kats (known in Japan as New York Nyankies) is a side‑scrolling platformer where the cat hero Willy uses a multifunctional punch gun to rescue his girlfriend Jill from a gang of canine criminals ruling New York. Mastering the punch gun is crucial: it fires projectiles, serves as a grappling hook, and can toss objects. The game offers five "channels" – four selectable stages (including a carnival, a moving plane, and other city locales) and a final boss channel that opens once the others are cleared. A shopping channel lets you spend earned cash on power‑ups like Bombs, Twin Balls, Hammer Punch, Jet Sneakers and extra lives, while a bonus channel houses minigames such as roulette, pipe toss, and basketball that award more cash and lives. After the credits, a hidden “secret” stage strips all upgrades and raises the difficulty, demanding flawless use of the punch gun.
Storyline
In Rockin' Kats you step into the shoes—or paws—of Willy, a budding jazz cat who’s made a name for himself in New York City under the stage moniker “The Rockin' Kat.” His world is turned upside‑down when the local mobster Mugsy snatches his girlfriend, Jill, and disappears into the shadows. Determined to rescue her, Willy must battle his way through seven distinct “channels,” each presented as a TV‑style level with its own visual theme, thugs, and end‑of‑stage boss. The quirky, music‑infused adventure blends platforming action with a comic‑book crime story, culminating in a showdown that decides Jill’s fate and the city’s rhythm.
