Summary
Robo Warrior (sometimes just called Robo Warrior) drops you into an overhead arena where you control the robot ZED with four‑directional movement and a bomb‑laying arsenal. The gameplay feels like a cross between classic Bomberman puzzles and a frantic action shooter, demanding you to plant and detonate multiple bombs to clear paths and defeat foes.
The game throws a surprising mix of level formats at you across its 27 stages. Some rooms force a race against the clock to snatch a key, while others hide the key behind a crystal or chalice you must first locate. Darkened stages keep walls invisible unless you light a lamp, and maze‑like areas require you to blast weak points in walls to advance. Water stages add a splash of variety, and every few levels you’re pitted against a boss that tests everything you’ve learned.
Beyond the basic bomb, you can collect an arsenal of twelve distinct weapons and six special powers scattered throughout Altile. Megaton bombs, hyper missiles, super boots, cross‑fires, super bombs, energy capsules, life pods, power balls and more each bring a unique edge, letting you tailor your strategy against the relentless onslaught.
The enemy roster is a parade of ugly, aggressive creatures—Wisps, Wanes, Tracers, Strinkers, Skraugs, the Globula, Gholem, Viripides—each with its own attack pattern, from dive‑bombing to grabbing. Enemies respawn, giving you a chance to stock up on explosives, but you must keep moving, find keys, hit switches, and stay alive long enough to claim victory in this relentless, bomb‑filled war.
Storyline
Robo Warrior takes place on Altile, an alien world engineered by scientists as a solution to Earth’s overpopulation. The planet enjoyed a peaceful era until the Xantho empire invaded, seeking to reshape Altile for its own profit while the Earth‑decommissioned Robowarriors lay dormant.
You play as ZED – a Z‑type Earth Defence cyborg who is half man, half machine, described as a one‑man battalion with a human heart and a computer’s brain. Across 27 battle zones he blasts his way with bombs, clearing rocks, walls and forests, slaying enemies and gathering items to free the desperate Altile inhabitants who have fled underground after Xur seized the weather‑control station and plunged the surface into bitter cold.
The ultimate aim is to defeat Xur, the Xantho leader, and restore the planet. The original Japanese version, released as Bomber King, tells a similar story set in 2036 where a combat android Knight is sent to investigate mysterious climate changes and put an end to the threat.
