Summary

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves landed on the NES with a buzz that started months early — it even graced the cover of Nintendo Power well before anyone could get their hands on it. The game throws you into an overhead adventure where you steer Robin through forests and dungeons, slashing at guards and rescuing allies. What makes it stand out is how it blends different perspectives to keep the action fresh. One mode switches to a side‑view duel that lets you jump, strike, and guard, turning each encounter into a little sword‑fight ballet. A separate melee view pulls back to an extreme overhead angle, showing huge clashes between Robin’s merry men and the Sheriff’s troops. The quirky horse‑racing segment mixes both viewpoints, forcing you to time jumps over debris while keeping your lead. The equip system is delightfully loose — almost any item you pick up can become a weapon, even a chicken leg that Duncan brandishes when he first joins the band. Recruiting Little John, Friar Tuck or Will Scarlett isn’t automatic; you have to prove yourself in these challenges before they stick around. I still love how the game rewards experimentation and a playful spirit.

Storyline

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves begins in an Arab prison in Jerusalem, where Robin shares a cell with Peter Dubois and Azeem. The player frees them; Peter is mortally wounded during the escape, while Robin and Azeem reach England. There Robin learns his father has been killed and the Sheriff of Nottingham rules in King Richard’s absence. Maid Marian informs him of rebels hiding in Sherwood Forest and urges him to join them.
Robin finds the outlaw camp in Sherwood, which becomes his base. From camp he receives missions, leaves to complete each task, then returns for the next. Objectives include rescuing villagers, gathering supplies, and confronting the Sheriff’s men. The camp updates as new quests appear.
The final mission is a showdown with the Sheriff; defeating him ends the oppression. The game ends with Robin and Marian’s wedding, interrupted by the returning King Richard. Richard gives Marian away, and the ceremony proceeds, sealing the legend’s happy conclusion.
