Summary
Phantom Fighter (霊幻道士, Reigen Dōshi) drops you into a neon‑tinged world of Chinese vampire lore, where you play as a kung‑fu master battling through eight distinct towns. Each locale teems with kyonshi and ends with a quirky boss, all leading up to a showdown with an evil witch that feels like the climax of a low‑budget horror flick. The game rewards curiosity: hidden quizzes let you unlock special Kung Fu techniques, and a secret baby kyonshi named “conshi” lurks somewhere in the code. Despite its 1990 NES debut in the U.S., the title feels surprisingly generous, offering infinite continues, a surprisingly deep move set, and an inventory screen that actually lists every item you could ever find. It’s a nostalgic beat‑’em‑up that blends arcade‑style combat with a quirky, film‑inspired narrative, making each playthrough feel like a quirky side‑quest through a haunted movie set.
Storyline
Reigen Doushi (known in the West as Phantom Fighter) puts you in the shoes of a kung‑fu master tasked with rescuing eight besieged villages. Each town is overrun by mischievous Chinese phantoms called kyonshi, which act like zombie ghosts that grow larger and tougher as you improve.
You must battle through the streets, defeat the unique boss that haunts each settlement, and protect the frightened villagers with the help of your rather incompetent sidekick. The action ramps up as the kyonshi become more powerful, demanding sharper reflexes and better timing.
After clearing all eight towns, the final showdown pits you against an evil witch who commands the phantom horde, bringing the quest to its climactic conclusion.
