Summary

Rampart drops you into a frantic tug‑of‑war between cannon fire and brick‑laying. After a quick placement phase where you line up Tetris‑like blocks to seal gaps around your castles, the battle erupts: you fire slow‑moving cannonballs at incoming ships, trying to keep the enemy from punching holes in your walls. The slower projectiles force you to lead your targets, turning each shot into a tiny prediction game.

When the ships are sunk or time runs out, the damage you’ve taken is laid bare. The next building round becomes a puzzle of its own—large blocks often overshoot tiny breaches, and any leftover pieces can block future repairs, making each successive round harder than the last. Every fully enclosed castle grants an extra cannon for the next arming phase, while the home castle can even yield two if space permits.

The NES version, finally released by Jaleco after an aborted Tengen run, carries the same core loop but adds a few tweaks, like extra training levels in the Japanese Famicom edition. Critics were split—some praised the blend of strategy and action, while others found the learning curve steep—but the game’s influence is clear: its wall‑building defense mechanic foreshadowed the tower‑defense genre that would blossom a decade later.
