Summary

Rampage on the NES drops you into a chaotic tour of North‑American cities, letting you control two oversized monsters—George the giant ape and Lizzie the reptilian beast. The game’s simple premise hides a surprisingly deep set of mechanics: you can climb any building, punch it to rubble, and recover health by munching on anything from fruit to roast chicken and even hapless soldiers. Damage comes from a mix of enemy fire, falling debris, lightning and even the occasional punch from a rival monster, forcing you to keep moving or risk reverting to a helpless human silhouette. Each level is timed to a day count, stretching the destruction across roughly 150 days and 50 different locales, from the skyscrapers of Chicago to the bridges of San Francisco. The NES port trims the original trio down to two characters, but retains the series’ signature blend of monster‑movie homage—think King Kong, Godzilla and a were‑wolf‑like creature—while delivering that satisfying, pixel‑perfect smash‑through feel that made the arcade classic a lasting favorite.

Storyline

Rampage on the NES lets you control three mutated monsters—George, Lizzie and Ralph—who were once ordinary humans before experimental accidents turned them into a giant ape, a lizard‑like creature and a wolf‑man. The opening cutscene introduces Colin as George, his wife Rae as Lizzie, and Nauman as Ralph, setting the stage for a massive demolition spree across North America. Players must raze every building in a high‑rise city, eating civilians and smashing helicopters, tanks, taxis, police cars, boats and trolleys to clear the way to the next level. The game’s timeline spans 128 days, with each cycle repeating five times, while another source cites a 150‑day rampage through 50 different cities, emphasizing the sheer scale of destruction. Throughout the chaos, military forces try to stop the trio, but the goal remains simple: total annihilation of the urban landscape.
