Summary
Mendel Palace, released in the West as Quinty, was Game Freak’s very first title and the project that launched Satoshi Tajiri’s career. After tinkering with Nintendo’s Family BASIC, Tajiri built his own development kit, spent a year coding, and finally shipped a quirky puzzle game where two kids in bright vests flip floor tiles to send wandering dolls crashing into walls. The whole action unfolds on a single 5‑by‑7 screen, and the simple "flip" mechanic hides a surprisingly deep strategy, especially in dark rooms where you must anticipate hidden tiles.
The game supports solo play or cooperative two‑player mode, letting friends coordinate flips and even use special spinner tiles to slam enemies. Each palace contains ten rooms, a boss, and a brief cut‑scene of the heroine being whisked away, giving the puzzle a light narrative thread without slowing the action.
Quinty sold roughly 128 000 copies worldwide and earned praise for its old‑school charm and crisp animation. A 2003 Tokyo museum exhibit highlighted it as a product of ’80s otaku culture, and its legacy lives on: the experience helped Tajiri shape Pokémon, and the title resurfaced in the Namcot Collection and the Nintendo Classics library in 2026.
Storyline
In the NES platformer Quinty, you control Carton, a young man whose girlfriend Jenny has been kidnapped. The abduction is carried out by Carton's younger sister, Quinty, who is jealous of the attention Jenny receives. Carton must navigate a series of levels to rescue Jenny and confront his sister. The Japanese version of the game identifies the characters by these names and centers the plot around this family rivalry.
