Summary

Q*bert’s NES debut, released by Ultra Games, kept the original’s quirky isometric pyramid while translating its single‑handed joystick to the console’s D‑pad. The diagonal control scheme—originally a 45°‑rotated four‑way stick—felt odd at first, but the game rewards persistence as each hop flips a cube’s color toward the target hue.

The arcade’s cast of characters survived the port: the snake‑like Coily hatches from a purple egg and pursues the orange‑capped hero, while the flying Ugg and Wrongway zip along the sides, and the green Slick and Sam undo your progress without actually harming you. Red balls bounce down the pyramid for an instant death, green ones freeze foes, and floating discs act as emergency elevators that can even send Coily plummeting for bonus points.

Audio quirks also made the jump to the NES: a Votrax speech chip spits out the famous garbled "@!#?@!" balloon text, and a pinball‑style knocker thuds loudly when Q*bert falls off the edge. Though Electronic Gaming Monthly’s 1989 review was mixed—scores ranging from 3 to 7 out of 10—the game’s oddball charm and challenging puzzle‑platform blend have kept it a nostalgic staple for retro fans.
