Summary
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom drags me into a quirky rescue quest where Sir Cucumber must free Princess Tomato from the scheming Minister Pumpkin. The game presents each location as a static window seen from a first-person perspective, and a brief description sits beneath the scene. Command options – move, talk, give, fight, and others – letting me interact without a keyboard.
The kingdom is populated by cartoon-like fruits and veggies, with occasional humans like Tomato's sister Lisa and the odd Farmie. Buttons stay the same throughout, giving the experience the feel of a text adventure translated to a joystick.
Progress hinges on gathering items, solving puzzles, and surviving the "finger wars" showdown with Pumpkin – the only point where I can actually lose. Fun side note: Princess Tomato later resurfaced as a DLC character in Super Bomberman R.
Storyline
Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom is a quirky NES platformer set in a world of anthropomorphic foods. In the peaceful Salad Kingdom, Minister Pumpkin stages a coup, kidnaps Princess Tomato and triggers King Broccoli’s death from grief. Before dying, the king commissions Sir Cucumber, a brave knight, to rescue the princess and promises him her hand in marriage if he succeeds.
Cucumber journeys toward the Zucchini Mountains, battling Pumpkin’s minions, the Farmies, while his sidekick Percy the baby persimmon provides comic relief. Along the way he receives aid from a resistance led by Tomato’s younger brother, Prince Lettuce, who coordinates sabotage against the usurper.
The quest blends colorful humor with classic side‑scrolling action as Cucumber strives to restore order and win Tomato’s heart.
