Summary
Power Blade arrived in the U.S. as a heavily reworked version of Taito’s Japanese *Power Blazer*. The hero, Nova, was redesigned into a muscular, Terminator‑ish figure that even sparked a mild legal complaint from a movie‑star’s lawyers over the box art. The North‑American cut also swapped the original robot protagonist for this Schwarzenegger‑style action‑hero and overhauled the levels to give the game a tougher, more arcade feel.
Gameplay shines thanks to its eight‑directional boomerang, a rarity on the NES, and a Power Suit that lets Nova fire energy blasts called Power Blades. Power‑ups expand boomerang range, number and speed, while a password system lets you resume at any checkpoint and a stage‑select screen lets you tackle the six sectors in any order. Unlike its Japanese siblings, falling off‑screen is instant death, adding a steep edge to platforming.
Critics praised the tight controls and cinematic feel; IGN later ranked Power Blade 82nd on its Top 100 NES list, and contemporary magazines awarded scores in the high‑70s to low‑90s. Its distinct art and high‑octane action have kept it a cult favorite among retro collectors.
Storyline
Power Blade takes place on the colony of New Earth in the year 2191. The player controls Nova, the Chief Security Officer of the Master Computer, a super‑computer that runs the planet’s essential systems. After an alien assault disables the Master Computer, Nova must retrieve six data tapes hidden in the surrounding sectors to reactivate it.
Each sector is guarded by alien forces and requires Nova to first locate an agent and obtain an ID card for the sector’s security room. After clearing the guards, he secures the tape unit, which disarms that sector and allows progress toward the central hub. The iconic weapon is the Power Blade, a glowing energy boomerang that Nova wields throughout the mission.
With all six tapes collected, Nova penetrates the Master Computer’s Control Center, destroys the corrupted core, and restores order to New Earth. The game blends side‑scrolling action with a sci‑fi storyline set in a recovering 22nd‑century colony.
