Summary
The NES version of Platoon drops you into the chaos of a fiveāman squad, letting you flip between the soldiers as each can only take three hits before falling. This characterāswap mechanic adds a layer of strategy that feels surprisingly fresh for a 1988 cartridge.
StageāÆ1 is a sideāscrolling trek through dense jungle, where you can move both horizontally and vertically, jump over pitfalls or duck under gunfire, and plant explosives to bring down a bridge. After the blast you wander into a village to snag a torch, a map and a trapādoor, all while enemy airstrikes pepper the area.
The action shifts to a firstāperson tunnel in StageāÆ2; the map you recovered guides you through winding passages as you gather flares and a compass, dispatching foes that pop up constantly. StageāÆ3 keeps the firstāperson view but traps you in a bunker under siege, forcing you to use the flares to illuminate silhouettes and aim a crossāhair at the oncoming soldiers.
The final leg returns to a thirdāperson jungle sprint with a fourāminute clock, where the compass helps you navigate toward the boss, Sergeant Barnes, holed up in a brick bunker. Five wellātimed grenades are all you need to end the confrontation.
Critics praised the gameās gritty graphics and authentic sound effects, but many noted the steep difficulty and occasionally sluggish controls, making Platoon a memorable yet demanding film tieāin for NES fans.
Storyline
Platoon, the NES adaptation of the 1986 war film, drops you into a Vietnamāera jungle and a maze of tunnels. In StageāÆ1 you must locate buried explosives, plant them on a bridge, then scavenge a torch and a tunnel map from a nearby town. StageāÆ2 switches to a firstāperson view as you crawl through the tunnels, gathering flares and a compass while fending off enemy soldiers. The third stage traps you in a besieged bunker, where you use flares to illuminate foes and shoot them down. Finally, StageāÆ4 returns you to the jungle in thirdāperson perspective; you survive a fourāminute gauntlet, dodge sniper fire, and face Sergeant Barnes in a brick bunker, defeating him with five wellātimed grenade throws.
