Summary

Phantom Fighter captures the spooky charm of the 1985 film Mr. Vampire with a classic NES beat‑‘em‑up twist. You play as a Kung Fu master battling mischievous Chinese kyonshi that infest eight distinct villages. Each town ends with a quirky boss, and the final showdown pits you against an evil witch.

The game spices the fights with “skill quizzes” that unlock special moves from a wise Kung Fu master, turning memorization into extra firepower. A surprisingly deep move set lets you chop, kick, and even throw enemies, while a hidden baby kyonshi named “conshi” lurks as a secret playable character. Over fifteen enemy types, ranging from tiny ghosts to hulking specters, keep the action fresh. Passwords let you pick up where you left off, offering virtually limitless continues.

The sprite animation feels fluid for an NES title, and the sound effects give each punch a satisfying thud. Bonus dialogues pepper the stages with humor, adding a light‑hearted tone to the otherwise eerie settings. Critics gave it mixed marks, hovering around a modest 5‑6 out of 10, but the quirky mix of quizzes and kung‑fu action still makes it a hidden gem for retro collectors.

Storyline

Phantom Fighter puts you in the shoes of a kung‑fu master who must cleanse eight towns plagued by kyonshi. Each town is overrun with these undead creatures, and a unique boss awaits at the end of every stage.

After defeating all eight bosses, the hero finally confronts the evil witch who controls the kyonshi, bringing the nightmare to an end.
