Summary

Paris‑Dakar Rally Special! on the NES feels less like a traditional race and more like a series of quirky challenges stitched together. Each "day" flips the perspective – from a top‑down, vertically scrolling desert sprint to a side‑scrolling obstacle gauntlet where birds drop eggs and bridges collapse. Mid‑stage you’ll find yourself dropping rubber balls to distract pursuers in a Rally‑X‑style chase through Parisian streets, then swapping to a car‑boat that skims ocean waves while dodging sea creatures and jagged rocks. The later days crank up the chaos with mounted machine guns for taking down enemy aircraft and tanks, before the final dash returns to the original time‑pressured sprint. The whole experience is a testament to the NES’s off‑beat creativity, delivering a roller‑coaster of oddball gameplay that still manages to capture the spirit of the legendary rally.

Storyline

In Paris‑Dakar Rally Special the player’s first task is to win the legendary rally, but the adventure begins far from the desert. Stage 1 – Preparation leaves the racer without a vehicle, forcing them to wander the town, secure a sponsor, raise money, obtain a car and recruit a navigation partner by speaking to sponsors, executives, bank tellers and rally coordinators in the correct order. Once the paperwork is done, the player catches a plane to Paris and officially starts the grueling race. The rally proceeds under increasingly chaotic conditions, as World War III erupts sometime between the start and the sixth day, yet the competition must press on despite the global conflict.
